After the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, three teenagers find themselves displaced in France: two eighteen-year-old Ukrainians, Ruslan and Dima, and seventeen-year-old Russian Orfey. Ruslan has lost his home, and his hatred of everything Russian is uncompromising. Dima lives with his aunt while his parents remain under bombardment in Ukraine, taking a demanding construction job where he works side by side with Russians. Orfey fled Russia with his anti-war mother, leaving his father behind; in France, he feels like an isolated outsider, fearing he may never see his father again. The arrival of Orfey, whom the Ukrainian boys mockingly call “the Russian,” changes everything. Even far from the front line, the war continues to destroy their lives—a shell hits Dima’s parents’ home, and Ruslan’s ill mother is forced to return to Ukraine for surgery, leaving Ruslan without a home or documents. As their lives unravel, the only person remaining beside the Ukrainians is the one who, by the logic of war, should have been their enemy. Three Comrades explores what war does to the generation that will have to live after it.
