Bedouin shepherd communities who live in the magical spaces of the Jordan Valley have to deal with a variety of pressures and threats. The film follows the complexity of the ‘human layer’, that disturbs the peacefulness of the desert and awakens ancient struggles. All this, against the backdrop of, and perhaps in contrast to, the wonderful scenery of the desert.

In the Israeli Wild West—the West Bank—nomadic Arab communities struggle to survive under the weight of occupation. In this lawless and contested land, Palestinian shepherds are being displaced by Jewish settlers claiming pastures for their own herds. Amid the clash of stones, soil, people, and sheep, a group of defiant Israeli activists stands in solidarity with their Palestinian friends resisting injustice. In her raw and unflinching documentary, Hadara Oren offers an intimate look at a microcosm of the larger conflict, where Arab farmers, Jewish settlers, and young soldiers all find themselves entangled in a battle over identity, territory, and conscience—all seen through the eyes of those who refuse to look away – Amir Bogen, Lighthouse International Film Festival

Festivals & Awards:

Best Documentary Feature Award at Lighthouse International Film Festival 2025: Jury's Justification:

"Set in a turbulent West Bank and unfolding in real time with persistence and attempts using a handheld camera, this film captures the daily resistance of Palestinian shepherds and the Israeli allies who stand besides them against settlers expansion.
The Shepherd's Keeper is awarded Best Documentary Feature, for timely relevance, unflinching visual exploration of urgent real-world issues, and exceptional ability to illuminate the humanity of its subjects. It deeply resonated with us, exemplifying the power of documentary storytelling."

Honorable Mention at Docaviv 2024 (Beyond the Screen Competition In the name of Ilana Tsur Docaviv Founder): Jury's Justification:

''Activist documentary needs to work on many levels to be poignant, timely, important and revealing. To provide a window into a world of what is never seen - especially when dealing with injustice and racism. It will leave viewers angry and conflicted. In this case we witness unfiltered adversity, questioning what it means to be Jewish, the role of the State and whether one is able to ignore what they see and look the other way.
