After the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, three teenagers, a Russian and two Ukrainians, find themselves in France. Eighteen-year-old Ruslan, from Ukraine, arrived in France with his mother, fleeing the war. He has lost his home and everything that connected him to his former life. His hatred of everything Russian—the language, the people, and Russia itself, becomes the only way he can hold on to his identity. Eighteen-year-old Dima, also from Ukraine, lives with his aunt, works on a construction site, and waits every day for news from his parents, who remain under bombardment in Ukraine. Behind his constant jokes lies the fear of one day learning that they have been killed. Seventeen-year-old Orfey was forced to leave Russia with his family. His parents openly opposed the war, and returning home could mean being sent to fight in it. In France, he does not speak the language, does not feel he belongs, and lives with the feeling that he has lost his country without finding a new one. Gradually, the lives of the three teenagers become intertwined. Together they try to find their place in a new country where they are safe but never stop feeling like outsiders. Yet even far from the front line, the war continues to shape their lives, gradually leading the story toward a tragic ending. Three Comrades explores what war does to the generation that will have to live after it.
